We had the great opportunity to sit down and chat with the band Spacejam. They had a lot of awesome information to share with us that we are stoked to share with you all! Spacejam is an English/Swiss/French rock/punk/pop band based in France and led by singer/guitarist/composer Sebastian Parris.
Spencer Davis: “Who inspired you to become a musician?”
Sebastian Parris: “The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, all the UK and US Punk bands (Sex Pistols, Damned, Clash, Ruts, UK Subs, Ramones, Television, DK, Dead Boys, Bad Brains…) Siouxsie & Banshees, The Cure, Joy Division, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam..”
SD: “How would you describe the music you create?”
SP: “We spread a powerful and melodic rock with poetic and dreamlike lyrics. We are a power trio and on stage the songs are much more powerful and they literally rock your socks off and blow your mind away. On stage, we go straight to the point, no time to beat around the bush. Our audience takes a one-way trip to escape and change of planet. Welcome to our world!”
SD: “Who is one artist you would love to collaborate with?”
SP: “Robert Smith from The Cure.”
SD: “What’s your favorite album of all time?”
SP: “Pornography by The Cure”
SD: “If you could open for any artist, who would it be and why?”
SP: “My answer is not going to be very original but I am going for The Cure once again, because I have two major musical influences in my life as a musician, who are: The Beatles and The Cure. I choose the band in which there are the most living members! I would like to open for The Cure because being able to show Robert Smith that I had the chance to meet regularly for several years, the work that I have done since; would be an honor for me as a songwriter. John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Robert Smith are genius songwriters who shaped the songwriter that I am today. I cannot thank them enough.”
SD: “Favorite concert you’ve been to?”
SP: “My first ever gig was the Sex Pistols at Brunel University (Uxbridge) in December 1977 and I was 12.”
SD: “What are your favorite and least favorite venues?”
SP: “The best show we played was the Zenith in Toulouse (SW France) We played in front of 8000 people and the worst, a festival called Festirock (SE France). We were to end the festival around 11:30 PM Due to delays and bands not respecting their time on stage, we finally started our show at 01:30 AM and played in front of 50 Drunk geezers screaming at us and throwing things on the stage at us. It was hell on stage for 30mn we kicked a few out of the stage, brilliant!
SD: “What does your writing process look like?”
SP: “I usually write the song melody first, a chord suite with my acoustic guitar and a vocal melody without lyrics. I use my phone as a recorder, and I immediately have a result that allows me to develop the construction of a song. Then I listen again one or a few days later and if I find the musical theme interesting, I will develop the song by first defining the general attitude and story I want to talk about, what the music inspires me. At the end of the process I will take care of the post production of the song by defining the number of verses, of choruses, and in what order, the musical color… In other words I take care of the sauce last.”
SD: “What’s coming up next for you?”
SP: “We will be recording a brand new song called Weirdo in December at the Onemusic studio in Geneva (Switzerland). Then we will produce the video clip. I have a lot of songs in stock that’s one of the advantages of this lockdown I guess!”
